City Breaks in Edinburgh, the inspiring Capital of
Scotland
Famous for
its Castle, the Royal Mile and Princes Street, Edinburgh can offer its
visitors a diverse range of sightseeing and entertainment
opportunities. With the Herald House Hotel's central location, most
of these popular local attractions can be discoverd on foot or by using
the local bus service.
The Herald House Hotel is known for its good
quality, budget, bed and breakfast style accommodation and we don’t
believe you have to spend a fortune to enjoy all that Edinburgh has to
offer. With this in mind, we’ve put together a selection of places and
things we love in and around Edinburgh to help you budget your stay
here.
We’ve started with Edinburgh
Castle & the
Royal Mile, the Scottish
Parliament & Arthurs Seat, then uptown shopping
at Princess Street and boutique shopping in Stockbridge – giving lots of
information about free
open Parks and Gardens you can enjoy whilst discovering the commercial
sites of Edinburgh. We will build on this with details of the main Art
Galleries & Monuments which are central, cheap to enter and great
tourist attractions, information on Edinburgh Zoo, Edinburgh sports and
leisure centres (for the kids or just for rainy days) and give you some
local updates on places like the Grassmarket, the Meadows and the Canal
walkways, which are walkable from the Hotel. We are also working on a
compilation of all the best value restaurants around the city centre as
the Herald specialises in bed and breakfast accommodation only.
We
hope this helps you plan your visit to Edinburgh, we haven’t covered the
big events such as Edinburgh Festival & Fringe which run throughout
August, the Film Festival in June or the Winter Festival & Hogmanay
Party in December/Jan, neither have we touched upon the theatres and shows
on tour here, but there is lots of brochure and web information about
these organised events available in the Heralds’ Hotel foyer. Edinburgh
has something for everyone and really is a great holiday destination for
even the shortest of breaks.
Transport
One of the best ways to get around Edinburgh is by bus.
Edinburgh has 2 main bus operators, but within the city, Lothian Buses can
take you almost everywhere. A single adult ticket is on Lothian Buses
costs £1.10 or 60p for a child. However, it may be worth buying an adult
day ticket for £2.50 (child for £2), this way you can hop on and off any
Lothian (red and white) bus throughout the day anywhere in the city. If
you are going to visit many attractions during your stay, Lothian buses
also sell adult & child Ridacard weekly passes at £13 per adult or £9
per child. If you are looking to travel further afield, Haymarket train
station is walkable from the Herald House Hotel in around 4 / 5 minutes.
From here, trains to Glasgow Queen Street station run every 15 minutes and
deliver you right into the centre of Glasgow in around 45
minutes.
Prices may be subject to change during peak season, please check
with individual
companies.
